Story
We're drawn to the artful mismatch of the traditional with the non-traditional. Our Avigail sleigh bed is a great example. The moulded silhouette of the headboard, and sweeping curve of the side-rails are unmistakably evocative. The main panel of the headboard is painstakingly steam-bent, a true commitment to design. And with the low footboard, and relatively austere execution – absent ornate edge profiles and applied mouldings – the look lands with a distinctly fresh feel.
With the low footboard and deep side-rails, our Avigail is a combination platform bed and traditional sleigh bed. The sweeping curve across footboard repeats the curve in the side rails. The heavy posts of the footboard corners reference the solid posts of the headboard. The end of the bed sits on feet made of perpendicular ogee curves that line up slightly proud of the footboard and rails, adding a shadow line and a touch of robust character. This repetition in details helps to provide a through-line, an ever important sense of coherence.

A Complete System
Dispose of that awkward, free-with-mattress, frame from the sleep store – the one with those lousy, stubbed-toe-hazard, rollers on the bottom. Our Avigail sleigh bed is a complete system. The outside posts of the headboard and footboard connect directly to the heavy duty side-rails, and there are three cross-slats. Each cross-slat has a foot supporting it from the floor. Easy to assemble, and with ample support throughout the bed, it's a clean look and a simple, dependable system.
Mattress Height
It's worth thinking about how high you want your bed. Between the thinnest bed-in-a-box on one end of the spectrum, and the thickest super-double-pillow-top on the other, we've seen mattress between 6" and 26" thick. Our Avigail bed looks best with about 18" combined box-spring and mattress, for a finished height around 25".
The Avigail is designed for use with a box-spring, but we can accommodate mattress-only setups. For thin mattresses, we can raise the support runners on the inside of the side-rails. For extra thick mattresses, it's possible to moderate the finished height by using a "low profile" (thin) box-spring, or no box-spring at all (in which case, our solid wood, slatted platform solution is available).
